The fact that he only mentioned one aspect of his job that allowed him an expression of his core-essential values (working with shadow interns), and it wasn’t even a primary aspect of his work, is possibly a large reason that the rest of Kevin’s year was draining, and summer camp felt like respite. By knowing what his core-essential values are, Kevin may begin to take a closer look at his personal life and career and look for new ways in which he may be able to incorporate his core-essential values. For example, as a corporate accountant Kevin’s work is very solitary and does not afford him the opportunity to connect with others much. He may look for temporary projects or company initiatives he can get involved with that would allow him to connect with others more. If he were to get involved with particular initiatives like sitting on a committee whose mission is to help create childcare solutions for single parents in the company, Kevin could be expressing his core-essential values of contribution and connection. In addition, if he were to participate in the company’s internal mentor program where senior employees would mentor junior staff members for a period of one year, he could be expressing his core-essential value of inspiring others. All three of these possibilities are ways Kevin can begin to incorporate a greater expression of his core-essential values into his life without turning his whole life upside down. Incrementally building a greater expression of our core-essential values keeps us stretching, growing, and evolving into the person we were meant to be. If you keep your sights on incorporating more and more of your core-essential values each day, each week, and each year you will soon find that your entire life becomes oriented around that which is most important to you and you are living your very best life, as your very best self. The following worksheets will help you explore and unearth your core-essential values. Even if you think you already know what they are, do the exercises anyway. You may uncover a hidden surprise.
