57 A DA P T I N G T O C H A N G E WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE RESIST CHANGE? Earlier we looked at the Messages Model and saw how not being present to the messages that were coming to us can lead to problems and sometimes crisis. There is another dimension to this model in that sometimes we do get the messages, but we resist making changes to act upon what we are seeing or hearing in those messages. We may fool ourselves by saying we have no choice, but the truth is we always have a choice. We just may not be ready or willing to assume the consequences of that choice yet. So, what becomes of our resistance to these changes we know we need to make but are not willing or ready to? We become irritated or very dissatisfied with many things in and around our lives. Often the things we become dissatisfied with are not even related to the true source of our irritation. The true source being our irritation and dissatisfaction with ourselves for not making the changes we know we must make. Using friction energy like frustration, impatience, anger and cynicism often become our energy source to push us through the change eventually. By embracing change and reframing your relationship to change in general you can avoid this very costly energy source that often leaves a wake of hard feelings and broken intentions. FINAL NOTE Change is constant and innate and happens whether we want it or not. What and how we think can often influence how smoothly change happens for us. If we approach change with a sense of adventure and curiosity and give up resisting it, the process of changing is often much smoother and can even be a pleasant transition. If we truly embrace change, we know that things will change, as all things must, and we will be facing those changes with many questions. But if we can find contentment in just being present with the questions, we allow ourselves the freedom to start working into the answers.
