79 E N E R G Y M A N AG E M E N T • She would do as much preparation in the morning for dinner prep as she could, even cook the meal and heat it later if possible. • She would do emails and return phone calls once a day, in the afternoon. • She would limit the time spent on having personal phone calls with difficult people or family members to 10 minutes and would work to have more email correspondence with them in the future. In two weeks, we asked Liza how she was doing with her energy budget. She said by making these changes she was able to reduce her e-dollar expenditure by 45 e-dollars! This brought her daily total to 150 e-dollars per day. Still a deficit of 55 e-dollars. Liza had more work to do. 2. MAINTAIN YOUR PHYSICAL ENGINE This is an area where some of us do well and some of us, not so well. For those of us who do well at maintaining our physical engine, there is always room for improvement. For those of us who don’t do so well, the guilt of not doing it usually costs us many e-dollars. e-dollars we could be using to do better. So often we preface our talk around these things with a ‘should’. • “I should be doing more exercise.” • “I should really floss my teeth every day.” • “I should get a physical examination.” • “I should be drinking more water.” Making ourselves wrong for NOT doing it weighs heavily. Why do most of us remain in this cycle of procrastination? Because we haven’t connected what we feel we should be doing to what is most important to us. It has no relevance to what we are most passionate about or to our core-essential values. We’ll be talking more about core-essential values later in this book, but for now let’s use the example of someone who has a core-essential value of family. If your family is a core-essential value for you then it would probably be important for you to share in as much of their lives as you can and to be in your best health during that time. If that is so, then the following questions must be addressed: • What needs to be done to assure your longevity and wellbeing? • What are you telling your family about their importance in the way you are taking care of yourself physically? • What are you modeling about taking care of your physical self for the younger members of your family?
