Raising standards can make dramatic improvements for you and can quickly put you in alignment with the person you choose to be. On the other side of the coin, we can also be kept from the person we choose to be if we are held prisoner by standards that are too high and don’t allow us enough freedom to be our true selves. Read the story below about Ted who is a perfect example of standards that are too high. Ted walked out of his review feeling good. He had received an excellent review from his boss and was in a good position for a healthy raise. His boss said she wished she had twenty more like him on her team. She did say one thing that perplexed Ted a bit though. She said she thought that Ted should take life a little easier. She said he had wiggle room to kick back a bit and slow his pace down. When Ted asked her what she meant she said that Ted put his work and his job before all else and used the example of him only taking one day off after his father died several months ago when the company policy said he could take up to a week off. Ted defended that decision saying the fiscal reports were due at the end of that week and he would have only been sitting around dwelling on his father’s death.
