81 E N E R G Y M A N AG E M E N T Most of us feel guilty about doing them because we don’t have many messages in our hard-working culture telling us this is as much of a responsibility to ourselves and our well-being as exercising or eating right. There are no measurable goals associated and therefore hard to show others the benefits and justifiable reasons to continue. But make no mistake, research is finding that many of these kinds of activities are just as important to our overall health and wellbeing as eating right and getting plenty of exercise. They add back large quantities of e-dollars to our energy budgets. Most of us are taught to be generous and kind to others and for the most part that teaching meant self-sacrifice fueled by obligation instead of choice. Not many of us were taught to be kind and generous to ourselves first in order to have enough to give to others. A comparable metaphor would be the message we get from flight attendants on airplanes before takeoff. We are told in the event of an emergency where the oxygen masks would drop down, we are to place the mask on ourselves first before helping others. If we can’t breathe, we can’t help!
