  • Requesting
  • A request is not a demand or expectation
  • Example conversations
  • What requesting is not
  • Requesting Exercise
  • Key learning points

Note: This is an advanced skill that requires proficiency in using the Coaching Exchange, Listening, Questioning and Encouraging.

  • Requesting asks the coachee to think bigger, act bolder or liberate themselves from something.
  • Coaches make requests when the coachee is stuck, holding back or selling themselves short.
  • Requests send a powerful message that the coach sees something bigger for them.
  • A request is constructed by seeing the opportunity to make a request, making the request and then allowing the coachee to accept, reject or negotiate the request.
  • It is important for the coach to anchor the commitment to the request by asking for a deadline or timeline and specific action(s).

Note: Requesting is the one skill that is new to many. Its sounds easy and logical at first, yet it is a skill because it is hard to do effectively in the moment without showing judgement, bias or directing the coachee.
