Your ICF Credential
What Are the Requirements to Renew Your ICF Credential?
By Angelica Castaneda, MBA · 2026
How often do you renew?
Your ICF credential is valid for three years from the date it was awarded or last renewed. Before that three-year mark, you complete your continuing education and submit your renewal through your ICF profile. The requirements are the same whether you hold an ACC, PCC, or MCC, with one extra step for ACC holders, which we cover below.
The requirements at a glance
Here is what every renewal cycle asks for. The numbers below apply across all three credential levels.
| Requirement | What's needed |
|---|---|
| Total CCE credits | 40 credits, earned within your 3-year cycle |
| Core Competencies | At least 24 of the 40 credits |
| Coaching Ethics | 3 of those 24 Core Competency credits must be in ethics |
| Resource Development | The remaining 16 credits, in Core Competencies or Resource Development |
| Mentor coaching (ACC only) | 10 hours, which count toward your Core Competency credits |
| Renewal fee | 175 USD (ICF members) / 275 USD (non-members) |
What each requirement actually means
The 40 CCE credits
CCE stands for Continuing Coach Education. These are credits you earn from ICF-approved learning, and you need 40 of them over your three-year cycle. They split into two categories: Core Competencies and Resource Development.
Core Competencies (at least 24 credits)
These credits deepen your actual coaching skill, the competencies the ICF credential is built on. At least 24 of your 40 credits must fall in this category, which keeps renewal focused on the craft of coaching rather than on peripheral topics.
Coaching Ethics (3 of those 24)
Within your Core Competency credits, 3 must specifically cover coaching ethics. The ICF offers a complimentary online ethics course that satisfies this requirement, so these 3 credits are the easiest to secure and cost you nothing.
Resource Development (up to 16 credits)
The remaining 16 credits give you room to grow in related areas: business development, a coaching niche, adjacent skills, or more Core Competency work if you prefer. You can put all 40 into Core Competencies, but only 16 are allowed to come from Resource Development.
Mentor coaching, for ACC holders only
If you hold an ACC, your renewal includes 10 hours of mentor coaching with a qualified mentor coach. Those 10 hours count toward your 24 Core Competency credits, so they do double duty. PCC and MCC holders have no mentor coaching requirement at renewal.
How to renew, step by step
Track your credits as you go
Don't wait until year three. Log each CCE credit as you earn it, and keep your certificates of completion. Renewal is far easier when your evidence is already organized.
Complete the ethics requirement early
Take the ICF's free ethics course to lock in your 3 ethics credits. It's the simplest box to tick, so get it done first.
ACC holders: schedule your mentor coaching
If you hold an ACC, arrange your 10 hours of mentor coaching during the cycle. Remember these hours also count toward your Core Competency credits.
Log in to your ICF profile and submit
Before your three-year expiration date, submit your renewal through your ICF profile, record your credits, and pay the renewal fee.
Plan ahead: renewing late can mean extra fees, and letting a credential lapse can require you to re-apply rather than simply renew. Treat the three-year mark as a deadline you work backward from, not a date you scramble toward.
Where to earn your CCE credits
Many credentialed coaches earn their renewal credits through continuing education programs offered by ICF-accredited training providers. Advanced courses, specialized skill programs, and mentor coaching packages are all common ways to accumulate the 40 credits while genuinely sharpening your practice. Choosing ICF-approved CCE ensures the credits actually count toward your renewal.
Always confirm the current rules. The ICF is the authority on renewal, and it updates its requirements from time to time. Before you rely on any figure here, verify the current numbers, fees, and deadlines in your own ICF profile at coachingfederation.org.
