How to become a coach: the path in five steps
Choose an ICF-accredited program
This is the foundation. An ICF-accredited Level 1 program prepares you for your first credential (the ACC) and ensures your training actually counts. No prior experience is required to start.
Complete your coach training
You'll learn the core skills of professional coaching, deep listening, powerful questioning, and how to guide a conversation, through live, experiential practice, not just theory.
Build your coaching hours
The ICF requires 100 hours of coaching experience for the ACC. A good program helps you build these through structured practice, so you're never left to figure it out alone.
Complete mentor coaching and your evaluation
You'll receive 10 hours of mentor coaching and a performance evaluation, both built into a comprehensive program, confirming you're ready to coach at a professional standard.
Earn your ICF credential
Pass the ICF Credentialing Exam and apply for your ACC. You're now a certified coach, ready to work with clients, be hired by organizations, and charge professional rates.
How long does it take?
A realistic timeline from your first class to holding your ACC credential is about 6 to 8 months. A quality Level 1 program typically runs around six months, with your coaching hours and credentialing following. That means if you start early in 2027, you could genuinely finish the year as a certified coach.
What does it cost?
Accredited coach training generally ranges from around $4,000 to $8,000 for a complete ICF Level 1 program, with foundational skills courses available for less.
