Learning Session 1

Learning Session 1 - After Your 5.5.5 Course

The 5.5.5 Coach Training Series exposes the student to The Process, The Skills, and The Mindset for coaching.

We are listening to how the student demonstrates:

  1. The 5-Step Coaching Exchange.
  2. The 5 Core Skills with a focus on Listening, Questioning, and Action Planning.
  3. The 5 Guiding Principles with a focus on Be Curious, Be Accepting, Be Supportive, and Be Focused.

Before Your Session

  1. Record one of your coaching exchanges (20 to 30 min in length).

  2. Obtain verbal (heard on the recording)  or written (permission form) from your client to use this recording for feedback purposes.

  3. Assess your own recording using the 5.5.5-Learners-Feedback.docx.

  4. Send your recording with the output of your assessment and the Self-Reflection section to your learning partner.

  5. Prepare your Focus for the session using the Note-To-Self (below).

  6. Meet for one hour with your learning partner to review your coaching session together.

  7. Obtain written feedback from your learning partner.

  8. Update the Self-Reflection section of the feedback tool with your learnings from the session.

  9. Return here to complete the after-session reflection (below).

  10. Practice, practice and keep practicing.

Before Your Session - Focus

This is your opportunity to get feedback, tips and insight from a fellow coach. Spend the hour wisely – take charge! A simple way to prepare is to ask yourself, given the recording you assessed…
  1. What did you do really well?
  2. What needs attention?

Work with your learning partner to validate your point of view and discover ways to:
  1. Do what you do well, even more profoundly.
  2. Have a tangible approach or action you can take to enhance your focus area.

The questions below may also help you prepare to get the best out of the moment.
  • What topic/situation/development do I wish to have clarity about?
  • At the end of the session, what do I want to walk away with?
  • What will I need to do to be very present and engaged with my learning partner?
  • How am I feeling about this upcoming session?
  • What is the voice in my head telling me about this?

Note to Self: Here is how I would describe my intention for this first learning-partner session.

After Your Session - Reflect

In your session with your learning partner/coach, reflect on the following questions to write yourself a note describing your takeaways from the experience.

  • What did I learn about myself?
  • What did I discover about the situation I spoke about?
  • Was I fully present in the session and what allowed me to be engaged or not engaged?
  • What actions did I commit to?
  • What did I learn about what it is like to be a client?
  • Am I open to being coached and why or why not?
  • What did my coach do that I would like to do with my clients?
  • What did my coach do, that I might not do with my clients?
  • How do I feel about the outcome of the coaching session?
  • What are my next steps?

Note to Self: Dear Self, here are take-aways from my learning-partner session 1.
